BIOGRAPHY
Park Chanho is a visual artist and researcher who explores human perception of post-death existence, spiritual experience, ritual practice, and encounters with invisible realities across cultural contexts.
Long immersed in the question, “Where do we return after death?”, his inquiry gradually led him to the study of mythology, and has since evolved into a deeper contemplation of the nature of the divine and spirituality.
Through documentary photography, film, and AI-based visualization methods, he investigates both fundamental human questions and the mechanisms through which experiences emerging in non-ordinary states of consciousness arise, as well as how such experiences can be translated into visual form.
His works have been exhibited internationally, including participation in the exhibition commemorating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy at the Museum of Oriental Art (MAO) in Turin from 2024 to 2025.
His photographic work was featured in The New York Times Lens, and in 2024 he received a grant from the Gwaertler Stiftung in Switzerland for Shrine, a project documenting Korean sacred sites and ritual culture.
The Shrine project examines how colonial history and rapid modernization have transformed indigenous belief systems and ritual spaces in Korea, while also emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity and the preservation of intangible heritage in contemporary global society.
Currently, Park Chanho is conducting a long-term research project based on interviews with 130 Korean shamans, investigating and visualizing spiritual perception and transcendent experiences. This research is expanding into an international comparative project that includes Himalayan traditions, and is planned to culminate in an exhibition and publication in 2027.
박찬호는 문화권을 넘어 죽음이후. 영적 체험, 의례경험, 그리고 보이지 않는 현실에 대한 인간의 지각을 탐구하는 시각 예술가이자 연구자이다.
우리는 죽으면 어디로 돌아가는가? 라는 질문에 오랫동안 침잠하던 그는 “신화”에 대한 탐구로 이어져 현재는 “신”과, “영성”에 대한 깊은 고찰로 이어졌다.
그는 다큐멘터리 사진, 영상, 그리고 AI 기반 시각화 방법을 통해 인간의 본원적인 질문에 대한 시각적 고찰과 함께 비일상적 의식 상태에서 나타나는 경험이 어떻게 발생하며, 그것이 어떻게 시각적 형태로 번역될 수 있는지를 탐구한다.
그의 작품은 여러 국가에서 전시되었으며, 특히 2024–2025년 이탈리아 토리노 MAO 동양미술관에서 열린 한국–이탈리아 수교 140주년 기념 전시에 참여하였다.
그의 사진 작업은 뉴욕타임즈 Lens에 소개되었으며, 2024년 한국의 성소와 의례 문화를 기록한 프로젝트 Shrine으로 스위스 그와이틀러 재단의 그랜트를 수혜하였다.
Shrine 프로젝트는 식민 역사와 급격한 근대화 과정이 한국의 토착 신앙과 의례 공간에 어떤 변화를 가져왔는지를 탐구하며, 동시에 현대 국제 사회에서 문화적 다양성과 무형 유산 보존의 중요성을 강조한다.
현재 그는 한국 무당 130명의 인터뷰를 기반으로 영적 지각과 초월적 경험을 탐구하고 시각화 하는 장기 연구 프로젝트를 진행 중이며, 이 연구는 히말라야 전통과의 비교 탐구를 포함하는 국제 프로젝트로 확장되어 2027년 전시와 출판으로 이어질 예정이다.
